DUDE... Animal Rights Movie Night!
05/22/2008 10:42 AM
You heard right, we will be holding monthly movie nights at Fifth Avenue Cinema. This month we will be showing "The Witness" which tells the inspiring story of Eddie Lama, a tough construction contractor from Brooklyn whose chance encounter with a kitten completely transforms his life. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist of the Los Angeles Times, Howard Rosenberg, said: “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important film about animals ever made.”
Lama's remarkable change in consciousness, from loathing animals to devoting his life to their protection, seems to be contagious. “I feel as though I have been walking around with a bag over my head, and my heart,” said one viewer in Albany, NY. “The difference those 43 minutes made in my perceptions are earthshaking for me.”
“The Witness touches something very deep in audience members,” says producer LaVeck, “because it shows how any person, from any background, can change. Eddie Lama is living proof of something that we all hope and pray is true, that one person’s change of heart can change the world.” LaVeck and the film’s director, Jenny Stein, founded their non-profit production company Tribe of Heart, to fill an unmet need for films that explore the human potential to respond to injustice with creativity and non-violence. Tribe of Heart’s second film, Peaceable Kingdom, is currently on the film festival circuit and recently won a festival award for “enriching the human spirit through film.”
We are asking for a $5.00 donation for the Let Live: Northwest Animal Rights Conference (the darn thing is expensive!) Although there will be free popcorn (we checked the ingredients and it looks vegan…no promises), you are more than welcome to bring your own snacks! The doors open at 7:00PM and the movie starts at 7:30PM. So PLEASE try and make it!

Your Burger or Your Car?
05/07/2008 11:56 AM
Just a reminder about Mia MacDonald coming to discuss the environment and our diets! Please be there to learn about the effects of the animal production industry on the global level Come no matter what you eat!
Which is more destructive to the environment—what you eat or what you drive? The answer may surprise you. International public policy expert Mia MacDonald, executive director of New York-based “action tank” Brighter Green, provides fascinating and compelling evidence on how animal agriculture is at the root of a host of environmental problems, including deforestation in the Amazon, desertification, and climate change. At the same time, meat consumption is soaring as McDonald’s, KFC, and Burger King and huge “protein producers” like Tyson and Cargill expand into markets in Asia and Latin America. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Just as we can develop alternatives to fossil fuels, we can also change our agricultural practices and eating habits. It all comes down to recognizing the true costs of our lifestyles and adjusting policies and practices accordingly.

Want to share some Recipes?
02/02/2008 07:53 PM
We had our first successful meeting on Friday; seven of us were in attendance at the Food For Thought Café. We ate, chatted, and worked out details on our goals for this term. Our first goal is doing as much as we can to save the Bonneville Sea Lions. We will be posting up signs very soon on campus, so please help spread the word! We also discussed plans for our first Potluck and recipe-sharing event; it will be Feb 22nd from 6PM to 7PM. We are working on a room and give notice when we secure the exact location.

Vegan Mini-mall
01/06/2008 10:49 AM
The Vegan Mini-mall is opening tomorrow the 7th! I am very excited for this event and will be attending. If you would like to meet let me know, we all should come out to support our local vegan shops! Sweet Pea has THE best-baked vegan goods (try their brownies!), Food Fight is much larger and now has a nacho cheese dispenser, Herbivore has the best vegan gear and you can’t forget about Scapegoat Tattoo with all of our favorite vegan tattoo boys! I’ve heard there will be different events at each shop, bands and of course just general vegan fun. Please come out, no excuses - work it around your schedule!
