DUDE... Animal Rights Movie Night!
05/22/2008 10:42 AM Category: Events
You heard right, we will be holding monthly movie nights at Fifth Avenue Cinema. This month we will be showing "The Witness" which tells the inspiring story of Eddie Lama, a tough construction contractor from Brooklyn whose chance encounter with a kitten completely transforms his life. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist of the Los Angeles Times, Howard Rosenberg, said: “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important film about animals ever made.”
Lama's remarkable change in consciousness, from loathing animals to devoting his life to their protection, seems to be contagious. “I feel as though I have been walking around with a bag over my head, and my heart,” said one viewer in Albany, NY. “The difference those 43 minutes made in my perceptions are earthshaking for me.”
“The Witness touches something very deep in audience members,” says producer LaVeck, “because it shows how any person, from any background, can change. Eddie Lama is living proof of something that we all hope and pray is true, that one person’s change of heart can change the world.” LaVeck and the film’s director, Jenny Stein, founded their non-profit production company Tribe of Heart, to fill an unmet need for films that explore the human potential to respond to injustice with creativity and non-violence. Tribe of Heart’s second film, Peaceable Kingdom, is currently on the film festival circuit and recently won a festival award for “enriching the human spirit through film.”
We are asking for a $5.00 donation for the Let Live: Northwest Animal Rights Conference (the darn thing is expensive!) Although there will be free popcorn (we checked the ingredients and it looks vegan…no promises), you are more than welcome to bring your own snacks! The doors open at 7:00PM and the movie starts at 7:30PM. So PLEASE try and make it!

VegFest & On Campus Tabling
05/22/2008 10:32 AM Category: News
We had a crazy weekend! VegFest on Saturday was a blast, coconut ice cream…YUM! Our buddies from Animal Defense League, Blossoming Lotus and Food Fight! were all there. Lisa Higgins from Sweet Pea did an awesome cupcake-cooking demo, I got to try the cupcakes first hand…believe me they were great! I heard this year was the largest turnout (I could hardly get to Papa G’s for a Monkey Bar) and the booths all looked amazing. A lot of new tables were present which was fun, and one of us even got a Tofurkey Lunch Box!
If that wasn’t fun enough we held our first tabling on campus Monday. From the gracious donations by FARM, we had a nice little setup. Feel free to visit our Myspace page for pictures! We handed out some literature, chatted with several people and even collected some more email addresses! If you are interested in joining us for our monthly outreach projects please send us an email or check our Google Calendar for the next date!
